Summary

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Review

The only reason why I didn't give a full 5 stars is because of the rather slow beginning, but once things started to pick up, the pace continued to quicken.

It took me a while to get all the kids' names in order in my head, but I got it down eventually!

Now, this may be a bit of a spoiler, but typical to Clare's Shadowhunter books, there is some forbidden love going on. I really felt that tug on my heartstrings in those scenes between Julian and Emma. I actually didn't start really feeling it until Emma began reciprocating Julian's feelings. After that ending,I'm really looking forward to seeing how this relationship wll work out, assuming we'll get a Happy Ending.

As far as the story, it was a nice mystery. A different vibe I think from Clare's other books. I was honestly not expecting the person revealed to be the "villian." While TID will always live in my heart as my fave Shadowhunter series, this was definitely a nice addition, and I didn't mind how long the book was. Finally, it was nice to see some appearances from our old friends in TMI and TID.
